Like many people we dig accessories; from watches to jewelry, to lapel pins and ties, we run-a-muck in that business. But before it can even become our favorite, we add it to our collection for our own personal fancy. However, we started off with the essentials and we suggest our clients do the same.
The essentials are what keep your suiting wardrobe together; it allows you the foundational freedom for both business and play, and supplements your desires to branch out with the promise of both function and bold integrity. The difficulty arises when there are too many options, and not enough styles, materials, and colors that are anchored in what historically works in everyday lifestyles (especially when it comes to accessories like ties). How does one narrow in on the essentials when there are such a wide variety of ties? Simple: We look at what works, and why they work.
Versatility and depth of color and texture is what prevails. So here’s what we recommend:
1.) Solid Silk and Wool Ties-- These ties are a must. Use them for weddings, casual days, work, and play; use them for nearly anything and everything because there’s no way you can go wrong with these ties. Kipper suggests always keeping a black, light grey, charcoal, and brown solid tie in your collection. These guys can accomplish anything, especially when they come in varying textures, and many of the greats can be found (just to name a few) at Mr. Porter and J. Crew.
2.) Knit Ties -- Silk knit ties are perfect for summer, and wool knits for harsher weather. Knit ties are the perfect matrimony of both business and play. You can wear these ties for professional occasions or days out at the park, and still be the ideal combo of collected and charismatic. Kipper’s favorite knit ties are the silk navy and black tie which can be easily found (along with many other tie essentials) at The Tie Bar.
3.) The “Minimalist,” or Geometric, Ties -- Whether it’s pin dots, medallions, or squares, these are power ties; ties that are meant to help you bring the fire to all those professional events or daily work days. These ties will respect you and your professionalism the way you respect your dreams. So, trust in its simplicity and secure these ties in your collection by finding many of our favorites: Mr. Porter, Ralph Lauren, and Brooks Brothers.
4.) The Paisley and Floral Ties -- These ties are conversational ties, ties that project character, energy, and a keen understanding of casualness. Use these ties for dates out with your significant other, at graduations, weddings, and even work days (just make sure you’re already hired). Our favorite floral ties come from Weekend Casual, Pocket Square Clothing, and The Tie Bar.
5.) The “Don Draper,” or Striped, Ties-- These ties are for those days of responsibility and self-improvement; if you’re someone who believes in the importance of history and education, these ties are for you and all those future internships, work days, and even weddings. The “Don Draper” tie is your all around “can-do-no-wrong” tie, and can pretty much be used for any occasion. Make this easy commitment and check out some of our favorite striped ties from The Tie Bar, Weekend Casual, and Ralph Lauren.
Are you the type of person who will base their suit attire on the type of tie you’re wearing for the day? We get it, so here are some ideas and favorites we wanted to point out!
